‘You're a family man, Remus.’ That's what they kept telling me. ‘A family man without a family.’
We have our own little family now, don’t we Li?
Mhm! We got Buck, Cheyenne, Cookie - do we still have those ginger cookies you made? They were soooooo good. Then Luna, Saph…
No Lia, we’re not naming any of the horses after our old friends.
But she was super mean to me, dad!!!

Bit of pilfering never hurt anybody. 31 years in the Inquisition, of kowtowing and obeying orders, I think I deserve a bonus.
Oh, oh, oh, can I play Astartes!? I’ve never held a bolt weapon before.
Ssssh, we’re going to stick this in my rucksack and you’re going to punt it over the fortress walls, Lia. We’ll pick it up after the party.
I hate parties…
There’s probably going to be cake.
Oooooooo, I love cake.
Equipment:
- 2nd Dragoons Fatigues

Road to Retirement:
Once an Inquisitorial Stormtrooper serving as security for numerous Inquisitorial fortresses across the Imperium and later found himself attached to several Inquisitors or their teams - one of which included his eldest sister Inquisitor Chrysanta Remus. 10 years he served as a bodyguard with Chrysanta across The Ends, the region of space that skirted the limits of the Astronomican. Julianus had quite the surprising history for a man of his status. Having travelled to every segmentum at some point in his life.
He’s seen Chaos, Genestealer, and other assorted minor Xeno cults investigated and flushed out. He saw a nightmarish Hrud, a creature he never wishes to see again but nothing a few overcharged hotshot blasts couldn’t deal with. Julianus, if pressed, gun to his head, had to choose a time he enjoyed the most during his tenure; it would have been when he served with Schafer and Machairi. Not necessarily for them, but for the teams they built and the connections they built. Those agents treated him more than just a soldier.
31 long years in the Inquisitions service, he was given one request from Inquisitor Sidonis/newly promoted Inquisitor Machai (To Be Confirmed) as thanks for Julianus’ loyalty and ability to survive in such a precarious role. The veteran stormtrooper asked without hesitation, could he continue being Lia’s handler? The Inquisitor snorted at him, but agreed, almost wholeheartedly as if it was a future problem solving itself. He didn’t really understand why. Julianus had grown a kindred spirit with the young psyker. They both never really had a childhood, he never had a family - a proper family, and she never had a life. Julianus sat Lia down and explained it to her, and she embraced him with a juvenile excitement.
Did you tell them the part where you cried? When you thought I’d say no.
I don’t cry.
Come on dad, don’t lie to them either.
The First Year:
They settled on Tephaine Minor, in a small town called Fravaux. In a small cottage as a part of his retirement package and stipend. Julianus took a weekend job in the PDF, starting off as a colour sergeant due to the false backstory and recommendation letters he received which implied he was a Baraspini NCO for 30 years. There was then contemplation if he should send Lia to school, that’s what kids did right?
Julianus decided against it, instead the rest of the week he devoted to Lia. Going through what she already knew and what they needed to focus on. She taught him Tallarn, a language she somehow knew but didn’t share the culture or heritage herself. Together they learned Tephaine. Then he tried to teach her social cues and societal expectations - not that a soldier from the Schola Progenium could say much but he was determined to try.
He bought books, spoke to other parents he met around town, and watched vid-reels on handling teenagers. Suddenly, this felt much harder than any battle he’d ever been in. He tried to explain how regular people didn’t like psykers, that her powers had to be their secret and she could only use them in private or emergency. Then he tried to bring up the lack of shoes as he had done many times before, defiant as always she was, even when he tried to explain how it might raise suspicions.
Remus was worried suspicions may have been raised over the ‘oven incident’. Neither of them actually knew how to cook and in a bout of frustration, no thanks to the gruel he was serving, Lia had taken her powers (her fists) to the stove. To save face, he just dumped the entire oven in the cover of night and bought a new one - hard to explain to a technician the two massive fist sized divots in the crumpled metal. Then he sat Lia down and promised he’d do better. Julianus was determined to learn how to cook, he spent nights reading and experimenting. ‘Healthy Kids, Healthy Parents’ and ‘Planning Family Food’ became his go to books. He tried to make it fun, to get Lia involved and let that infectious vibrant personality free.
Cooking became his passion, it was a surefire way for him to put a smile on her face. Then he started to notice just how big she was getting. Was it the diet? A growth spurt? The better living environment? Did kids always grow this fast? Did he? Another series of books, more questions to other parents. Some of them found it charming, a single father doing his best to raise his daughter. Those two words struck a chord with him, his daughter that's exactly what this familial relationship was. He wasn’t her handler anymore, she wasn’t an asset of the Inquisition. She was Lia, and she was his daughter.
After her 17th birthday, which was an excursion to the Altier Zoo and a small party with some new friends, he’d finally stopped asking for her to put on shoes. It was a battle he could never win. Even after he countered her object-demonstration for the perpetual bare-footedness with a "we're not fighting anymore, Lia." However, perhaps even frustratingly so, a month later Lia started to - for social events at least. She did listen, maybe, in her own way. He wasn't sure if he should commend her or ignore it.
You suck at telling stories. You didn’t even tell them the best parts. Like how you tried signing me up to sports.
I thought it’d be a good way for you to socialise with other kids your age.
I could have killed them, you know how competitive I can be! You can be pretty silly sometimes, Remy. Anyway… it’s my turn, give me this thing.

Do I have to dress like this, dad? You know I hate it.
You make it seem like I dressed you. That’s your wardrobe, I just said dress nice. Besides, it’s only for a few hours, everyone’s coming to see you for your big day. This is a great photo, I might put it on the fridge for everyone to see…
You wouldn’t dare… I can catch you.
Not if I ride Stetson out of here, I’ll make myself a town crier and then put your face on print media.
'Akrahuk.
No you don’t.
Name: Lia Remus
Nick-names: “Li (to Julianus)”
Age: 22 Terran Years
Position: Gamma Class Psyker, Stablehand, and Equestrian.
Weapons:
- Lasgun: Taken from Lirey Ranch stores. Military surplus bought by Julianus during annual Dragoon fundraiser.
- Her: Lia's psychic powers are heavily influenced by her skill in manipulating her own body. Through long (and sometimes frantic) practice she can render herself immune to just about any toxin and alter the density and physical properties of her body. She also has demonstrated the ability to metaphysically connect herself with objects that she is in contact with, allowing her to feel the object as if through proprioception. With this she can sense other beings in contact with the object (and who have had contact recently), allowing her to scout and track effectively. She can also spatially "lock" herself to the object at hand, attaching herself physically to it. She also displays a powerful telekinetic ability, but curiously is unable to project it; instead, she uses it to boost her movements, meaning she is far stronger than she appears.
Equipment:
- Necklace: A thin but very tough chain hooks through a solid silver ring and a massively oversized canine to form this necklace. Lia wears it at nearly all times.
- Leather Riding Boots: Practically the only footwear Lia will use with any frequency. Either when near or on the horses, or going into the town to socialize with 'normies'. She has a fondness for this pair as she wore them through two annual Pony & Hack club competitions in which she won several first and second place ribbons across the events. Though, she will rid herself of the fabric (even destroying them if she has to) at the first sign of trouble - Julianus will just need to buy her another pair, again. Many of her powers require physical connection to a floor or surface.

Father of the Year, I Never Knew I Had:
Remy was much nicer than the other soldier who watched over me. He smiled. He talked to me like a person, wanted to get to know me, and actually seemed to enjoy spending time with me. I was… very lonely before then. It was like I was just a tool, a blunt instrument. A lot of the bad behaviour was me trying to get attention. Remy certainly wasn’t perfect, he was very soldiery and didn’t know how to switch off.
When he retired he asked me to join him, and that the Inquisitor had already said it was okay. He promised to give me a life, an actual life, with friends and no more loneliness. I was overwhelmed, scared, but I trusted him. Next thing I knew we were travelling to an agri-world called Tephaine Minor, where they spoke a funny kind of Gothic - bon mot!, a bus ride later we were in Fravaux and we found the house they gave Remy for his retirement. I felt a little bad we stole that bolter, so did he, it was a cozy place. Made of stone, slate, and even had a fireplace!
For the entire first year he really did act like a dad, maybe a hopeless one as he - no we, struggled to accommodate to our new life. I did actually appreciate the things he did, Remy became quite the cook, and god-emperor dammit he was too supportive when I did something wrong. He really softened after leaving the Inquisition, maybe it’s because he wasn’t carrying 80 pounds of armaplas and ordnance on a daily basis at his age. Too damn patience that Remy, and I always felt supported. Even on the days I snuck out while he was working with the PDF yelling at the locals, maybe he was taking the parental frustration out on them?
I often saw horses around Fravaux, being ridden by enforcers, by the PDF in ceremonial parades, and during equestrian events. That was a sport I really wanted to do, none of the stupid silly stuff Remy was putting me into. I don’t know how it happened, but he agreed and when it came time to buy me a horse he ended up buying the entire ranch with much of his retirement funds. Eventually we moved out of the cottage and put it up to rent, and settled into the ranch itself. The Lirey’s moved out, a lovely old couple who made biscuits that rivalled Remy’s, and they retired to be closer to their own family.
I couldn’t imagine what my life would have been like had I said no and stayed in the Inquisition. At that thought, when Remy came back from work in the evening I hugged him and called him dad. He admitted that I was like a daughter to him as well, then later that week we went to the local administratum offices and finished the paperwork. Just ‘Lia’ became ‘Lia Remus’ and that once lonely girl officially had a family.
That’s how you feel about your old dad?
Hey, don’t read it, this is my diary entry.
This isn’t a diary, this is a local dossier in case we get reactivated. The Inquisitor might have classified our electronic records and retired us, but you never know.
What!? Let me delete it then!...
What about the other years?
They can ask us if we get reactivated! Give me!

Anyone want to do a flashback scene to Remus' retirement party with the TFC lot? Roughly post-Prophet timeline wise.
Also, can’t have Julie without Lia.
