Devrin grew up in the border town of Opalli, the son of a widow; his father, for whom he was named, disappeared into the Fringes on a failed hunting expedition. His mother, Ethriel, had her hands full between working in the mines, and raising a mischievous ruffian like Devrin who found it harder to keep his feet on the ground than he did leaping across rooftops. If Devrin wasn’t brawling with local kids, he was causing trouble elsewhere in the city. His acrobatic feats rubbed some people the wrong way, but things changed during his adolescence when his mother took sick, leaving him to take odd jobs throughout Opalli to support himself and his mother.
With no where else to turn, little coin to spare, he swallowed his pride, and sought the aid of the physician, Laureate Lucianus and her half-breed son, Lumen. He spent a year in Laureate’s clinic, watching his mother’s declining health despite medical treatment. The time spent in the clinic fostered a connection between the mother and son, with Lumen being the only friend his age that he had.
With Lumen gone to further his studies, Devrin had to face his mother’s passing shortly after. It was Laureate’s coaxing that kept him from throwing himself off a cliff, and with her help, Devrin secured himself an apprenticeship with Veteran, Duncan Fairchild, by the time he was fifteen. With his agility, quick wit and ambidexterity, Duncan sought the help of a rogue named Vale, to teach Devrin dual wielding combat as well as archery.
As the years passed, Devrin grew discontent with city life, opting for solo outings into the Fringes, much to the objections of his mentor. By the time he was nineteen, he joined a travelling Adventure party that made trips between the major hub cities, delivering supplies on occasion, with stops in underdeveloped towns along the way. Devrin often took side missions, delivering additional supplies, coin and labor to help those struggling outside the main hubs. In the six years travelling with the same party, they became like a second family to him. During this time, he fell in love with the herbalist archer, Minerva, who saved his life on numerous occasions.
In six years, Devrin and party logged about two years worth of experience in the Fringes and mountains of Opalli. They survived getting lost in a blizzard, where Minerva nearly died of hypothermia; trapped in a giant spider’s lair; ambushed by a pair of direwolves. Carelessness had lead to the death of two party members, dismemberment and serious injuries from beasts Devrin could not discern. Devrin was a risk taker, an adrenaline junkie and a bit of a show off - but even he knew when to pick his battles. The Fringes were anything but forgiving to the foolhardy and unlucky.
With the Festival in Giredania a month and a half away, they accepted a Salvage mission from Opalli. Their target location was a building they had swept a couple weeks before, but with corrosion, structural damage and constant possibility of enemy attacks, they weren’t leaving much to chance. No amount of planning can prepare a person for the unexpected, and when the concrete floor in the basement gave way, Devrin wasn’t ready to face Trolls in their own environment.
Devrin watched as the trio of Trolls wreaked havoc on his weakened party. The fall claimed as many lives as the Trolls themselves. Devrin made the mistake of downing the female Troll before the others, sending the two males deeper into a frenzy. Minerva, partially pinned underneath concrete slabs, bought Devrin time to escape. The sole survivor, Devrin was wrought with guilt, having barely managed to escape with his side clawed open. With his injuries, he managed to make it to Opalli in two weeks, using knowledge of medicine gained from Laureate and Minerva, to survive the trip back.
He spent his remaining time in Laureate’s clinic, nursing his wounds before heading to Giredania for the Festival. He made a promise, one that would honor the sacrifices of Minerva and the others, that he would join the Lion Heart, become stronger, and return to finish what was started.
