Never-Ending Conquest

In the minds of mortals there are great goals that they live their entire lives seeking to fulfill. It is common for mortals to desire love, to lust after fame and fortune, to chase after secrets, and to wish to see everlasting peace. Often enough what should end with a valued life of happiness ends in only misery and suffering for the world. War can be rooted in hatred, in ignorance, in a blood lust seated in the throne of cruelty, but just the same it can be born of such good intent. It appears no matter the means or intent, battle will always persist in the world of mortals.

The Western Empire, a land grabbing imperial power from the North, further pushes South seeking to take in new provinces which can then feed into the giant beast of a nation. Its Emperor undeterred by the legends of the South, unfettered by the heroes that claim the lands as their homes, and unmoved by the loss of life that was going to come. It only took the will of one man to start, just one man was the catalyst for what would turn out to be one of the bloodiest wars the world of mortals would see.

To the Northwest the Barbarian clans gather prepared to take back what was once theirs. In the Empire's bid for the South they pushed out any that resisted their sovereignty. With a grudge to claim the Barbarians wasted no time in gathering their hordes, ready to show the Empire that it was unwise to tear people from their homelands.

To the North East the Two Hundred Year War had finally come to an end with the Five Princes of the Five Kingdoms signing treaties and forming an alliance. With their hands freed it dawned upon them that the Empire was growing to be too great a threat for them to challenge alone. With imperials encroaching on their borders those of Dong, Nan, Xi, Bei, and Hexin merged together into a grand army of the united states.

In the center of the White Sea in the lands of Mersus the Deathborne of the islands had been building up a civilization. Untouched for centuries, they had grown quite a deal. Their holy leader, the Prophet and Archlich Koryza rallied her subjects into a crusade seeking to bring the entire world of mortals into the eternal afterlife with them. To them the living were suffering from mortality, and needed to be saved. The Deathborne viewed them not as enemies, but as resistant sinners who must be purged of life so they may enjoy eternal bliss.

At the Southwestern corner of the area a great power emerged. Demons from some hellish world came and destroyed kingdoms only to reforge them under a new banner. These chaotic and vile entities seek to conquer the world, offering whatever one desires should they become a part of the Destruin society. Without hesitation the Destruin have taken to offense, aggressively pushing out and claiming land wherever possible.

To the South in the Southern Kingdoms hastily treaties and alliances are signed. While within them all a hatred burns for one another, with the threats rising all around them the monarchs wisely decide to call a truce and band together. They join their armies, begrudgingly marching with one another to gather their collective strength and use it to hold what they have and survive the coming war. To help keep a unified force under control they elect one of the monarchs to act as the High Monarch, with the victor being King Richgarde of Tidren.

But the war looming did not escape the gaze of the Southern Dominion. A land rife with internal conflict and squabbles. Always ones to seize opportunities, the many governors held council and elected to go to war to see just how much land, gold, and power they could steal from the many nations fighting one another.

All had their reasons to fight, all reacted to the words of the Emperor. But none were prepared for the cost that would come with it all.

Deities and Spirits

Spoiler: Five Kingdoms Beliefs 

Spoiler: Celestial Dragons 

Large winged creatures of beauty, awe, and terror, are known as dragons. They are god-like creatures that are untamed, yet in the Five Kingdoms there is a special breed. These dragons lack wings and have elongated bodies, elk horns, the manes of lions, the whiskers of catfish, and the ability to exert mystical powers. In the Five Kingdoms these Celestial Dragons are worshiped unanimously and without question among the people. Once every year they make public appearances at temples and shrines where they pass on wisdom to their followers. Those who care for the dragons are highly respected.

Spoiler: Yaoguai 

Yaoguai are often evil or demonic spirits of the Five Kingdoms. These creatures mostly are spoken of in ancient history and it is believed that most Yaoguai were exterminated by the Celestial Dragons. Yaoguai who linger are believed to be deceitful tricksters whose cunning has allowed them to escape the wrath of the dragons. The Demon Emperor Baigujing could be considered the last known Yaoguai and first Yaoguai of his generation. How one becomes a Yaoguai is shrouded in mystery but it is believed making a deal with a demon turns one into a demon.

Hell is a concept the Five Kingdoms have. To them it is made up of multiple layers and courts and view hell as a capital of the underworld. It is in hell where dammed souls are tortured until they have paid for their sins in full. When one's sins have been paid for they are reincarnated creating an endless cycle of good will or damnation for those who live.

Within the Empire there is the belief in an ever growing pantheon of gods that all coexist. It is their belief that many of the gods of the world are simply called by other names by different groups. Whenever the Empire conquers or annexes a culture they also take in their gods. Because of this the gods of the Empire number in the hundreds, with each one adhering to the Supreme God Emperor. The Supreme God Emperor is the ruler of the gods and speaks through the Emperor.

Spoiler: The Creator 

In the Southern Dominion the prominent deity that is worshiped is simply called the Creator. In the deserts the Creator's name is spoken only in prayer. Their religion centers around a deity they believe created everything and simply let all of creation then exist without interference from that point. Some believe the sun is the creator but this is not very widespread.

Spoiler: Celestial Twins 

The second most common belief in the Southern Dominion is that of the Celestial Twins. This religion follows the idea that the sun and the moon are both gods stuck trying to find the other. To them there is a distinct balance to the world and nature that must always be kept. That there is an order to things which if disturbed could be catastrophic. Within this religion both kinds of eclipses hold incredible significance.

Spoiler: The Great Chaos 

The afterlife that the Deathborne have witnessed is not like any described in any religion. Instead those who have come back from death describe it as a great mass of lights, of souls ever moving in a great twisting ocean. The ocean is endless and that any caught in it are lost, and that only by escaping death can one be free of the great chaos.

Spoiler: Church of the Great Order 

The Deathborne have set up their own religion where undeath is worshiped. It is said to be returning Order to the Great Chaos. Those of this church are most often undead themselves, though many living do as well. The Great Order promises immortality and that death is only the beginning. It is headed by the Archlch herself.

Spoiler: Twins 

To the Saurians twins are destined for greatness. In their society they will elevate any twins to higher positions within their societies. This is because of an ancient story among the Saurians of twins who took part in a great hunt who fought and killed the greatest monsters available.

Spoiler: The Hunt 

To Saurians hunting is life. Within their society hunts are sacred and treated with a great deal of seriousness and respect. A hunt is only as worthy as its prey. Weak prey being hunted is not respected but the greater the challenge the greater the view of the hunter becomes. Saurians of all walks of life are expected to perform a final hunt when they are dying, where they are to finally fall to a beast worthy of killing them.

The Saurians believe in a pantheon of ancient gods with a great deal of focus on sacrifices and hunting. Their gods are ferocious and hateful, with a great thirst for blood. There is the Blood God Gazakill. The Goddess of Scales, Grizakill. Their most heralded god is the Great Serpent Kizakill.

Spoiler: Dragons and Saurians 

Long ago the Saurians worshiped dragons as their chief deities. During a great hunt a shift occurred when a Saurian claimed a dragon head as a trophy. They turned to the primordial gods for a sign and believed that the only way to prove Saurian supremacy was to kill the greatest prey, dragons. In Saurian lands few dragons remain other than the oldest and toughest ones due to Saurians hunting them.

Spoiler: The Burning/Frigid Islands 

Spoiler: Burning Spirits 

On the Burning Islands it is believed every fire has a soul, that every smoke has a demon. They believe in both burning spirits and smoke shades which are in a constant cycle of strife with one another. It is for this reason they are called the Burning Islands, while the spirits seen on the islands take the form of flames. They have both negative and positive spirits. Tricksters, demons, saints, gods, ghosts, all exist within this paradigm on the Burning Islands.

Spoiler: Kami 

Kami are greater spirits of the Burning Islands that are viewed as gods. One such Kami is the Peacock Spirit. Another figure worshiped as a Kami is the Shogun Hokarimitsuji. Kami are incredibly rare and are believed to mostly inhabit very specific places relating to them. It is the Kami who are believed to be responsible for life coming to exist on the Burning Islands.

Spoiler: Oni 

Demons are not new to the Burning Islands. They had existed in antiquety. There was a belief on the islands that those who are cruel and are great warriors become Oni. Many leaders of the islands have been considered Oni, while others have been seen as Saints who fight the Oni. The Shogun Hokarimitsuji is an Oni who combines blood magic with fire magic of the Burning Spirits.

Spoiler: The Fade(Otherworld/Faeworld) 

The Fade is another plane of existence that can meet with the mortal one. It is separate from the Ethereal and Elemental planes. The Fade is like an eternally shifting version of the world where seasons meet and civilization has never set foot. It is where the Fae live, and has its strongest connections in forests, especially the Wild Woods.

Spoiler: Kleeve-Solish 

A mythical blade of the Wild Elves, Kleeve Solih was from the time of the Tuath Day, when the beings who would become the Wild Elves were young. The blade, also called the Holy Sword of Light, was forged eons ago and was carried by many heroes of the Wild Elves' past. It is said in times of need the sword appears, able to blind enemies and strike down giants, when the descendants of the Tuath De need it most.

Races/Species

Spoiler: Racial/Species Mixes 

Those who are born from parents of different races/species are not considered half of one and half the other. Instead they are viewed as either being simply one or both at the same time. For instance someone with an Elf parent and a Human parent is considered not a half-Elf, but both an Elf and a Human, or just one.

Spoiler: Humans 

Humans are the most common type of mortal found around the White Sea. They average between five to six feet in height, have two arms, two legs, and a head. Humans usually have hair on the top of their head and depending upon genetic makeup or hormones will have hair on their faces and other areas. Humans are often seen as the standard species of the White Sea and can be found all over. Their skin tones can very from very light to very dark. Humans are incredibly diverse and can be found in most cultures.

Spoiler: Jotunn 

Giants. Really what more needs to be, the Jotunn of the Barbarian lands are gigantic and fierce. They stand roughly fifteen feet tall with limbs the thickness of rather thick trees. Across their bodies are thick patches of hair and one can often smell them from quite far away. Originally the Jotunn and Barbarians were at war with one another but after the destruction of both's lands by the Empire they formed a truce. Now these titans wield great clubs into battle alongside their former enemies seeking revenge.

Spoiler: Orcs 

Orcs are one of the less common species in the White Sea. They were often distrusted by humans but after enough years their presence has become normal enough. Orcs are stronger than mere humans and have more muscle mass. What an Orc does with this is up to them, most Orcs simply live their lives like everyone else. All Orcs have green skin and tusks with typically dark hair.

Spoiler: Fae 

Fae are not monolithic in nature, instead the term Fae encompasses a large variety of creatures of the Fade and Wild Woods. These beings are spirits that exist in the wilds. In nature most are very savage and chaotic, animal-like. The Fae are highly territorial and can often incorporate elements of nature into their being such as skin of bark, hair of leaves, and blood of sap.

Spoiler: Wild Elves 

Within the Northwestern forests near Barbarian lands live the Wild Elves. These Elves are viewed as primitives but that is not entirely true. Their society is heavily hidden from outside view and those who are not of the woods rarely dare enter. Wild Elves care little for modesty. They are typically lithe in build and have pointed ears and long messy hair. Often they mingle with Void Elves.

Spoiler: High Elves 

Those of the Iledrith Empire are known as High Elves. High Elves often have a high opinion of themselves and try to spread this notion. Their skin color can be changed through magic with those belonging to certain orders and ideologies changing their color to match. High Elves live as either typical High Elves, or one of the more specific variants. There are Sun Elves who are dark skinned and frequently have fiery red hair. Void Elves dislike all coverings and have purple skin with vibrantly colored heads of hair. Moon Elves have blue skin with black or blue hair and bright eyes. Star Elves have white skin and lack any pigmentation at all. Void Elves commonly mingle with Wild Elves. Finally there are Chromatic Elves, these High Elves have color changing skin at will and are rare, created only to be put in positions of immense power such as the Empress.

Spoiler: Tuath De 

In ancient times the lands that are now known as the Wild Woods and the iledrith Empire were ruled by an ancient people called the Tuath De. These Elves had mystical powers and were able to intermingle with the Fae Folk. They had legendary battles against evil spirits and over centuries helped create many of the myths the Elves now hold dear. For some reason they disappeared leaving behind two descendants, the High Elves and the Wild Elves. Both took their own respective paths and the Wild Woods grew and devoured the Eastern remains of their civilization. The Tuath De were enemies with the Fomoire, the giants and raiders of the East that were the ancestors of the Barbarians and Jotunn.

Spoiler: Deathborne 

Only a few centuries old, the Deathborne are a magical species comprised of spirits of the once living. These spirits inhabit reanimated bodies or sometimes exist purely on the ethereal plain. Deathborne are known as undead as they are something other than alive. Each Deathborne exists both in the physical and spiritual world at the same time. They feed on magic and the life force of others. Many among the Deathborne are ancient horrifying creatures.

Spoiler: Demons 

Demons were once scarcely seen on the face of the planet. With most of them existing in mere myths and fables. However they have turned out to be very real. Demons are corrupt creatures that are twisted and mutated. These mutations manifest as horns, scales, fur, and many animal hybridization. Pureblood demons are thoroughly born demons rather than being corrupted mortals, these creatures are supremely dangerous. Demons are fond of striking deals.

Spoiler: Dwarves 

Dwarves are short humanoids with two arms two legs and a head. They are stocky and stout and are often rather hairy. Their size typically ranges between four to five feet in height. Dwarves are loud and hairy, their beards are the stuff of legends. Rather than developing gunpowder in isolation Dwarves developed steam and rune based weaponry.

Spoiler: Saurians Greater 

Saurians are reptilian people with two arms two legs and a tail. Their bodies are coated in scales which are protective of their vital organs. At the ends of their feet and hands are thick claws able to rend flesh. Saurians are only able to reproduce with other Saurians. Their mouths are lined with razor sharp teeth. They are able to survive in warm environments but struggle in the cold. Saurians come in many shapes, sizes, and with different evolutionary traits. Some may have wings while others are much larger. The majority of Saurian warriors are of the Greater variety.

Spoiler: Saurians Lesser 

Smaller than their Greater kin. The Lesser Saurians have thinner scales and are generally more agile and cunning than their other Saurians. Their scales are thinner but to make up for it they are often more camoflaged than their cousins.

Spoiler: Crokkosaur 

Larger than their Greater kin. Crokkosaur are less intelligent but make up for it with incredible physical strength. They are natural born swimmers and have bone crushing jaws that can snap right into armor.

Spoiler: Naga Saurians 

Naga Saurians are bipedal creatures with fins and webbed digits. They are able to breath in both salt and fresh water. Their scales are a bit softer than Greater Saurians and are usually azure and other colors that match the water and wetlands they live in. Naga have larger fangs than other Saurians and are serpent-like in nature.

Spoiler: Trolls 

The average Troll stands at eight feet in height when standing fully erect, but this is a rarity to behold. Hunched over, the Trolls are beastly creatures native to the realms of the Troll Mountains and the Underdark. These creatures are wild and are not good at taking orders. Their hides are rocky with the throat, under arms, and backs of the knees being the only places with a softer leathery flesh. Trolls are physically very powerful creatures with dark hair and pale gray skin. Trolls regenerate unless they are burned with fire.

Spoiler: Mountain Trolls 

A giant thirty foot tall monster. Distant cousins of land trolls, the Mountain Trolls are incredible in size but have poor eyesight. They are lumbering, and move slowly in close range combat. Their skin is thick and rocky and can range in colors from gray to brown, green and blue. Mountain Trolls rarely leave their homes unless it is to eat, they can eat almost anything including wood. Mountain Trolls regenerate unless they are burned with fire.

Languages

Spoiler: Barbarian 

Shockingly this is the language of the Barbarians. The Fomoire language had a great impact on Barbarian, as it is an offshoot of Fomoire. They share many of the same roots and as such it's possible to communicate imperfectly by translating one into another. Barbarian features a lot of silent J's.

Spoiler: Demonic 

A language associated broadly with evil, Demonic is a language spoken mainly by demons. it is believed that the language is magically powerful and that its use when spellcasting amplifies the power of magic. Demonic is harsh and guttural.

Spoiler: Draconic 

A language known by few, it is the language of dragons. All dragons are somehow born with an innate ability to speak this language. Draconic words when spoken have a power to them. The language is spoken very slowly and it can take hours for Draconic sentences to be spoken, unless brevity is important. Very few Saurians speak this language, which is written down as runes.

Spoiler: Dwarven 

The language of the Dwarves. Their language is an ancient one the origins of which are lost. The language is spoken almost exclusively by Dwarves. It is written in runes that for some reason have magical influences on whatever they are inscribed upon. The Dwarven language is often considered a merry one.

An ancient language very few mortals know. Fae is spoken by the Fae and is written in runes. Runes in Fae are said to be very powerful and have magical effects when inscribed. The Fae are spirits of the Fade who have great significance to the Wild Elves. Very few Wild Elves speak and understand this language.

Spoiler: Fomoire 

An ancient language of the Barbarian lands. Mostly it is used for epic poetry now, but it used to be a very widespread language. As the Fomoire faded and became the Barbarians and Jotunn the language too faded, it is now mostly spoken by Jotunn.

Spoiler: Hexinese 

The traditional language of the Five Kingdoms. It is spoken formally among them and the Ryudeshi Empire. Typically it is reserved for court. Hexinese can be very complicated, most people of the Ryudeshi Empire speak Ryudeshi.

Spoiler: Iledrithian/High Elven 

The language of the High Elves of Iledrith. Iledrithian is a language spoken at an even temperament. Proper Iledrithian is expected to be devoid of emotion though this is mostly for formal speaking, informally it is hard for anyone to be completely passionless. Often this language is associated with mages and many magical tomes are written in Iledrithiian for the believed magical power of its words.

Because of Magnif's incredible love of nobility this language is often seen as an aristocratic one. People outside of Magnif can find it condescending, though it is also known as the language of love.

Spoiler: Mersian 

An ancient language from the land of Mersus. Long ago this language was widespread until the fall of the Mersians. Since then it was lost but due to the Deathborne surfacing the language has come with them. Mersian draws out vowels for long periods of time.

A language spoken on the Burning Islands. Murokura is relatively new and is only a few hundred years old. It was influenced by Hexinese, mostly in written form. The language is written in two different forms depending on whether you are from the Eastern or Western parts of the Burning Islands.

Spoiler: Ryudeshi 

A language related to Hexinese, it is a more simplified and less traditiional variant. It became common during the time of the first Ryudeshi Empire and was named as such. This language is what the common people of the Five Kingdoms speak as opposed to the more formal Hexinese.

Spoiler: Saurian 

A difficult language for humans to speak, Saurians is spoke as a series of clicks, hisses, growls, and roars. The language is based upon the natural noises that Saurian bodies can make. Pheromones and vibrations are very important when it comes to communicating in Saurian.

Spoiler: Schwarzmarshan 

An old language that has persisted to this day. Schwarzmarshan is spoken by those of Schwarzmarsh. People tend to see it as a language spoken in anger but it is beautiful in its own right. Many outside of the marshes have only heard it surrounding warfare.

Spoiler: Tidrish 

A common language in the White Sea, Tidren despite its size has been a very influential kingdom with many travelers going to and coming from its lands. Tidrish sometimes considered to be the unofficial language of the South.

Spoiler: Trade Language 

Often called Trade or Tradish, Trade Language is the most common language spoken around the White Sea. Essentially every culture has many speakers of Trade Language for ease of communication. Slang and dialect can vary greatly but most to some degree or one another understand each other.

Spoiler: Trollish 

The language spoken by the Trolls of the Southwest. Not to be confused with the Wild Trolls of the Northwest who speak Fae. Southwestern Trolls speak in a series of grunts and snarls. Their language is very simple but hard to learn and duplicate by non-Trolls. Body language is a big component of Trollish along with scents.

Spoiler: Tuath De/Ancient Elven 

Also known as Ancient Elven, this language was spoken by the Tuath De. This ancient language is mostly lost to time, as very few speak it. It flows very easily and is spoken somewhat slowly, each word is given a lot of care. Two languages have arisen from Tuath De, High Elven and Wild Elven.

Spoiler: Western/Imperial 

Simply called Western, or sometimes Imperial, this is the official language of the Western Empire. It is often treated as an aristocratic language. The language is forced on all within the Empire though most prefer to speak the language of their region.

Spoiler: Wild Elven/Aelfen 

The language spoken by the Wild Elves, also known as Aelfen by the Elves themselves. Wild Elven is spoken very quickly with words that lead into one another. The placement of words in each sentence is highly important. The Wild Elves naturally speak this language with ther Iledrithian cousins often understanding it, as do most Barbarians who live on the border with the Wild Woods.

Spoiler: Wild Hunt Language 

The language used by the King and Riders of the Wild Hunt. It is unknown to any outside of their group, even other Deathborne do not understand it. They keep its words' meanings hidden and prefer to speak it only with each other.

Magical Arcanum

Spoiler: Classifying Magic 

Magic is classified by what exactly its source is and what it is doing. For instance illusions could be made with either light or psychic magic. If one creates illusions in a person's mind, it is psychic. But if instead physical illusions made of warped light are being cast, that would fall under light.

Spoiler: Mixing Magic Types 

Not all spells are of simply one type. It is possible to mix types of magic together for completely new effects. Casting spells that are purely one type are easier and less complicated.

Spoiler: Arcane 

Often called the purest form of magic. Arcane is the most versatile magic there is, capable of having nearly any effect. This magic is able to be a source for casting most spells. Runic magic also is Arcane in nature. The simplest way to use it is to convert raw mana into it, Arcane is the easiest form of magic to learn.

Spoiler: Blood 

Magic that draws from the power of blood. Mainly associated with Vampires, Blood magic is powerful and dangerous. It can be difficult to use as Blood magic as it requires, well, Blood. There is a variety as to what Blood magic can be used for, because it is more about the source rather than the effect.

Spoiler: Earth 

The magic of stone, soil, of Earth. Earth magic is able to both create and alter the properties that are associated with Earth. Often Earth is related to physical power. The Dwarves are fond of this form of magic.

Spoiler: Fire 

Magic of heat and Fire, Fire magic is of and relating to any magic involving flames. Those of the Burning Islands are the main practitioners of Fire magic.

Spoiler: Frost 

The magic relating to cold. Frost magic is associated mostly with the undead or in Iledrith to the stars in the heavens.

Spoiler: Hell 

Hell magic is demonic in nature. It can have a variety of uses though often it is paired with fire. Hell spells are very powerful but often come with a cost.

Spoiler: Light 

The magic of light. Light can be used to burn, blind, create images, or even see. Its versatility helps Light magic casters with a variety of problems. Light magic is mostly practiced in the Western Empire.

Spoiler: Lightning 

Electric energy, Lightning magic is incredibly fast. It is often associated with the Celestial Dragons. Those who serve them are most often followers who practice Lightning magic.

Spoiler: Nature 

The magic often associated with the wilds. Nature magic has to do more with natural elements such as life, animals, plants. A common form of Nature magic is most healing magic. Though Nature can be used to cause harm such as in the case of magically spread poisons and diseases.

Spoiler: Psychic 

Any magic of and relating to the mind or mental effects fall under Psychic. The Deathborne are especially fond of using Psychic energy to communicate or instill fear in others.

Magic of the soul. Spirit energy is a form of magic that is very hard to control. It is magic relating to the Spirits of the world. This magic is also known as Divine magic and is considered to be related to the gods and souls of the dead.

Spoiler: Void 

Void magic, also known as Shadow magic, is the energy of darkness or the lack of light. Typically it is associated with evil and is a commonly disliked magic among the living. The undead however embrace it greatly. Much of the magic of the Deathborne is Void magic. Iledrithian Elves also have a massive population of Void magic users.

Spoiler: Water 

There are two groups that practice Water magic. The Waterbringers of the Ryudeshi Empire and the Mistbringers of the Wild Elves. Anything relating to Water falls under this magic type.

Spoiler: Wind 

Associated with storms, Wind magic is hard to control but can be helpful in sailing, and flying. It is any magic of or related to winds, and can even be used to precisely cut something.
