Default [M] Battle of Kasai Palace

It was a land on fire. In the distance flames raged and roared with thick clouds of smoke forming in the dark skies above the Burning Islands. Mersus had invaded and laid siege to the island itself, burning a scar deep across the land. Villages and towns were turned to ash before the mighty force, though their initial push had driven the Shogun's forces back they now made a proud stand at the palace of Kasai. The Shogun's seat of power. They were fighting not to the last but for survival. But a cold wind came from the South, an ominous sign to those who knew what was coming.

On a ship blockading the bay patrolled a lone soldier working the graveyard shift. At sea things had been quiet. With the Deathborne landing to the West it appeared they'd all but miss the battle along the Southern shores. A heavy fog had set in making vision as poor as can be. It was so cold the guard's torch almost flickered out. Amid his shivers he spotted a looming shadow, he ran for the alarm to warn the invasion had hit the South. But he stopped just short, as he saw the elegant designs and flags. Across the blockade the atakebune drifted and moved making way for the White Tiger of Nan's forces.

Through the fog the palace of Kasai was visible as a great shadow. It was not incredibly tall, and was built in multiple layers with tilted roofs at each level. The inner tower at first appeared rather weak until the steel framework came into view. Fires were lit all along the widely built walls and likely those were layered too. From what Arael had gathered from Hidega castles and the likes of the Burning Islands were designed to have many courtyards which were configured like mazes to confuse attackers.

What Arael could see though was the smoke of cannons and guns followed by their thunder rolling down the beaches. When they landed the Wight King had already started his assault along the Western reaches. From here his position appeared to be a bit weak with a funnel to the front gates creating a killing field for the Burning Islanders. Without proper assistance his battle would be a losing one while the defenders simply turtled behind their walls with their guns and cannons.

Along the Southern pass to the palace was a well trod and wide road that soldiers were in use of in small groups. They appeared to be patrols and so far the undead were treated as members of the Five Kingdoms. They had a clear path to the palace of Kasai with towers along the way that had large lit signal fires. Zyrael was left in command of the navy and would assault the Burning Island's ships when the ruse had fallen, this was also done so his unnatural cold would not give them away.

Something unexpected did happen to muddy the plans. From atop the palace came a great fireball in the direction of Arael's forces. At first they were prepared to scatter until they spotted something, someone, within the flames. It was the Shogun, Hokarimitsuji. She was flying towards their forces no doubt to meet with the Tiger of Kai. It seemed like in the blink of an eye she landed with a crash damaging the ground in a circle around her. There was a burning heat to her that sizzled the air around her as she marched towards Arael and removed her mask revealing the burned and scarred demonic face beneath. Her weapons were still sheathed at the moment, and she still was missing an arm.

It was fortunate that Arael wore a glamour, for it allowed him to show no surprise at the Shogun's sudden arrival. He was expecting something like this to happen, but he had secretly hoped it wouldn't come to this. He had a somewhat bad experience with the Shogun not too long ago, and sometimes he pictured her insane, murderous face in his mind.

As she arrived, he gave a polite greeting after the style of the five kingdoms and watched her with a grave look on his face. "I have lost too many good men in this relief effort." He said seriously, turning his eyes to the siege with trepidation. "Fortunately our enemy has no grasp on tactics. They funnel into your defences like goats to the slaughter."

Arael's tongue spoke deceptions, but his mind was focused on a contingency plan. He prepared to cast Ethereal Stride on himself and as many warriors around him as he could if anything went wrong. That would both allow him escape, and his troops access behind enemy lines.

"We need to break this stalemate, one way or another. Don't panic or make any sudden moves just yet. Perhaps we can make the most of this situation."

That murderous face now stared Arael down. Her skin was charred crimson, her eyes flickered with fire. She had thick jaws full of spiked teeth. The air that left her mouth was visible, it was much hotter than all around it. Her flesh was like scales of a large reptile. She resembled the dragons spoken of in myth and legend. That face got very close to Arael as it neared his. He could feel the heat on him, there was no mistaking the magic burning within her. A leather kiss was planted on his lips before she pulled away and turned her back to him.

"Wei you always talk of battle. Never of us, I feel so ignored." Her tone was rather sarcastic though her true intentions were hard to gauge. "I suppose I should get back to slaughtering undead by the bushel. Whoever commands them is a brute, my kind of brute. Though I know too little of these undead, who knows if they'll stay down. What do they even call themselves anyway?" Her one arm slapped Arael in the chest. "I kind of like whatever they are. If we combined their ability to rise again with our own demonic forces we'd be unstoppable. But you've always been against that for some reason. Just because they defiled a shrine." Her cackle reached far and wide.

So, it seems that Prince Wei was very good at inspiring loyalty and... affection. I doubt his sentiments toward this woman were truthful. If he could do it, surely I can as well.

No, that was going to require a great deal of luck. He'd need to play his cards right, and be prepared to initiate his contingency plan as soon as things got problematic.

Under the facade of Wei, he gave a cool nod. "It's out of the question. What they did to the shrine wasn't just defilement, it was a tactical decision." The look her gave her then was very direct. "It is possible that the Dread Emperor walks again as an undead monstrosity. They may already have mastered the strategy you mention now..." His expression shifted slightly. "We may speak more frankly in private... I know you don't take war as seriously as me, but you could at least try to give the battle your attention. If we do not position our pieces properly we may lose more than a few thousand warriors."

She threw her head back and laughed. "Speak frankly in private? We speak frankly here. I don't care who hears." Baigujing shifted slightly and kept a serious look on his face. The Shogun took notice of his eyes on her and laughed yet again. "You think I care what your warriors hear? I boast in the palace of our late nights. I speak with ministers of your dick and how it tastes. I'm a busy woman you know. If you have some sort of game you're playing just say whatever it is here." Baigujing sharply turned his face away, there was shock on it for but a moment. She cackled at this. "Wimp."

Her hand found purchase on Arael's shoulder. She looked him deeply in the eyes. Her exact facial gestures were hard to understand with all of the scars and warped flesh. She could be looking longingly, she could be furious, her emotions were not possible to tell. Then she slapped the lich and began sticking her hand into his robes and rummaging around. "You idiot, always acting so smart, but you forgot your talisman didn't you?" Hokarimitsuji grabbed him by the collar. "I should burn you where you stand. They have mages, they'll be able to do who knows what to you now. I gave you a magic nullifying stone for a reason you fool!"

Arael shifted his vision to the ground sheepishly. "I only meant... I admit I am somewhat shaken by the things I have seen. It worries me. I feel as if we need to give this battle our full attention." He turned his gaze back into Hokarimitsuhi's, and they were intense with anxiety - as if he had witnessed some terrible event. "You make me feel so... hot when we are together. But this enemy, they bring with them the cold of death."

At the slap, Arael adopted a slightly more timid expression. "I know their magic firsthand! I wore the amulet, but they managed to concentrate their power into it to... overload it somehow.

Arael subtly conjured a greater phantasm of the necklace, broken and useless within his robes. "I...I'm sorry! I couldn't help it. It saved my life in any case, their mages focused much of their energy into it - and I utilised my superior advantage in firepower to send their spellcasters into the sea. I won the battle, didn't I?"

There came a worrying comment. "Something is different about you Wei. You are acting a tad strange. I know the undead have vexed you but don't let them get into your head. It's pathetic." She removed her shortsword from its scabbard. "In either case, this battle is ours. It doesn't take a genius to know that you should take your forces and move West along the shore and hammer the undead from the rear. They're getting nowhere at the palace and I don't care how many times they raise the dead their numbers are being misused." Catapults and destruction orbs started to open fire on the walls while cannons returned fire. She kept her back to Arael and watched the siege in action. "They are magically advanced but their weaponry itself is so archaic. When we capture their leaders we should force them to serve us. Our guns and their magic would make for powerful alliances. We could crush the Empire easily."

Arael allowed a quiet smile. "You're right." he said, allowing his breathing to become a little calmer, all part of the charade. "I do not personally wish to work with these abominations - but if we could assert our dominance over them, they would provide useful aid." He directed his men to travel around to the west, and began the march. "Their tactics are archaic as well. They're throwing away their advantage at our walls. I'll be in support as soon as I'm in position, no doubt you're needed on the front lines."

Provided that the shogun indeed left him alone for the moment, he would cast Ethereal Stride and Mass Invisibility on an elite corps, much in the same way as he did back in the naval battle. He would direct those forces to get an idea on the layout of the castle, to scout out the labyrynthine maze and position themselves in key location so as to attack the defenders from behind, disrupt their artillery and turn the tides.

The Shogun affixed her mask beneath her helm and walked away from Arael. A slight whining noise came from her body and the air around her grew disorienting to look at. With an explosion of fire she was once again flying in the sky back towards her palace. During this time Arael had the opportunity to cast his spell. His heavy infantry moved with caution led by ravagers. This would be tricky to pull off but Arael's warriors got to work.

The march to the West and to the rear of the Wight King's army took quite some time. When they got within range Arael could see the destruction orbs open fire on his warriors. The undead under his command with wills of their own grew confused and angry. There came a pressure telepathically, one asking if the Wight King was their enemy. They were very uncertain, and at this distance couldn't readily communicate with Jar Eel. Their minds were not powerful enough. Far away Arael got some contact from the Wight King himself. "What doth thou want? Friend or foe, thine intentions are unclear. Misgivings unfold, betrayal I fear." He also gained contact with those inside of the palace. They were currently making their way to the Western cannons and had most definitely not been discovered yet.

Devoid of emotion, Arael raised his hand. "A miscommunication." He explained mildly to his warriors. "We will be rid of it quickly." So long as they could resolve the issue quickly, it would not prove too devastating for his forces. Friends. I bring glad tidings. The enemy reinforcements have been utterly crushed. I have disguised my men as warriors of their own side to gain proximity to their fortifications. I have agents within the palace already. However... that does not mean you should cease firing at us. To stop now would raise suspicions. Try to cause as little damage as possible, however. "We're going to use the artillery fire as a justification for gaining a position inside the palace. Do not let the attack anger you - it is all part of the plan. Any slain will be risen again. We need not fear death."

Marching toward the Southern gate into the palace, Arael gave a sharp nod to the guards on duty. "Our element of surprise has been compromised!" He called out firmly. "We are going to reinforce the fortress and create an iron redoubt that our enemies will not be able to penetrate. Open the gates, and together we will defeat this threat! Quickly, their artillery is causing unessecary casualties!"
