    Among Us

    The news was buzzing.

    Another person missing.
    Another person dead.

It had only been a few weeks since these news stories began to take over, but everyone already lost count of just how many people have been killed. Best friends, relatives, and even entire families have all been wiped out in just those couple of weeks. The police insist it's just another one of those murderers, curing his or her boredom through manslaughter.
However, these killings aren't taking place in one specific location. They have been reported anywhere from the United States, to Canada... to even as far as Europe and Asia. All of the assurances and promises made by the government and the police force, were only meant to pat down the mass hysteria threatening to break out among the people.

In truth, no one knew who, or what, was capturing and killing those hundreds of people. The possibilities were almost endless.
A new disease is spreading like the plague? But...no one reported feeling ill.
Terrorist attacks? But...where is the evidence they should have left behind?
Or possibly, an alien community landed on the planet, and they want it for themselves?
But that one's impossible, isn't it?

Despite what was being announced on the news, Juniper was determined to continue on with her every day life. She had college classes to focus on, and a GPA she did not want to drop. Though it was distracting, when the only thing her friends wanted to talk about was the mysterious deaths and missing person reports. So far, their little college town had been safe from the works of this thing, but that didn't mean it was going to stay that way for too much longer. Juniper was determined to believe that this would all blow over and it would become something that people joked about a few months from now.

As the weeks went by, and the news only continued to add stories of the broken, or dead, families, Juniper found herself starting to worry. She had never been much of a paranoid person, but now she found herself looking over her shoulder more often than not. There was never anything there...but she always felt as though something was still lurking in the shadows.

She was also beginning to notice something a bit off about one of her friends. It wasn't anything major, and if she hadn't been so paranoid, she probably wouldn't have noticed in the first place. Juniper had just started to pick up on words that sounded odd coming from this friend in particular. He wasn't vastly different than normal, Adam just

Juniper didn't pay much mind to it, and by the end of that day, she even found herself forgetting those brief moments of suspicion. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, at least... Not too out of the ordinary.

    --

About a day had passed since Juniper had started to sense something strange about Adam, and things were seeming to be normal again. She hadn't been around him since, but she still went about her day as she usually would. It wasn't until she reached her first class of the day, that things started to turn upside down.

The professor was standing outside the room, turning people away and insisting they return to their rooms. Out of curiosity, Juniper decided to continue closer to the professor, listening as he explained what had happened.

There's been a little accident. Do not worry too much, alright? We're still learning the details, but for today, all classes are canceled.

Juniper's confusion was not settled by this, and worry finally began to stir up in her gut. Something was majorly wrong, and she hoped it did not involve the person she suspected it might.

As she quickly turned away from the professor and started back the direction she had come, she instead bumped into the solid body of another person. She quickly took a step back, blinking up at the male with wide eyes. "Sorry...- I'm sorry," she murmured quickly, a blush creeping onto her cheeks in embarrassment. Though she recognized the male from her class, and realized that he must be on his way there. "It's canceled. Something happened, but I'm not sure anyone knows what exactly," she explained, glancing back at the professor before her gaze returned to the boy. Michael something, she remembered then. They had never spoke much before, but she new his name just from sharing the class together.

Michael's alarm went off at 8:05. Plenty of time to get out of bed and get ready for the day. He reached over to his phone and swiped the alarm off. The phone was set back on his dresser and he rolled over. He was still tired, but that comes with the territory of early classes. Michael rubbed at his eyes, reaching for his phone to check the time again. He pressed the home button and the screen lit up. The display read 9:54.

"SHIT!" Michael spat, throwing off the covers and half falling out of bed.

Class was at ten and he did NOT want to be late again. He threw off his pajamas and pulled on a pair of jeans. He left the tank-top he slept in on and just sprayed on deodorant. He hefted his backpack on to his shoulder, grabbed a snap-back off a command-strip hook, and ran out the door.

Michael pulled his phone out of his pocket, glancing at the time. The screen displayed a cheerful picture of a puppy and read 9:58.

"Shit shit shit shit shit." He muttered, picking up his pace.

He power-walked his way across campus. He had the stamina for it. Michael didn't do sports, but he went to the gym fairly consistently. His body showed the rewards of it. He was broad and well built, his tight tank-top showing off refined muscles. He didn't do it to show off, though, he just felt confident wearing that kind of clothing. He reached the academic building which held his class and practically ran up the stairs, taking two at at time. He got to the top of the stairs, turned the corner, and froze at the sight of the huge crowd.

Michael made his way closer towards the entrance of his classroom. He saw his professor standing at the doorway.

"Do not worry too much, alright? We're still learning the details but, for today, all classes are canceled."

All classes? He couldn't mean campus wide, could he? And why? What happened? Michael began walking towards the professor to ask him when a girl walked straight into him. He didn't even move an inch from the impact, but he grunted anyway. He looked down and recognized her. Juniper. She took the same class as him. Usually sat a couple seats behind him, but he always saw her come in. He listened to what she had to say and became even more confused.

"I'm gonna go talk with the professor." He said. "Excuse me."

He gently walked around the girl and continued his way towards the teacher.

    "Dr. Taylor, what's going on?"

"Ah, Michael. Listen, I need your help. You're a big guy and I need you to help me make sure that no one steps inside this class room. There's been an accident and I don't want anyone panicking."

"What happened?" Michael persisted, trying to look past Dr. Taylor and into the classroom.

He moved to block Michael's view.

"I'm sorry, it's none of your concern. Please just help me with the other students or move. Along." He said the last two words through a smile of gritted teeth.

If he was trying to stop Michael from being curious, he made the wrong move.

"Professor, I'm a grown man and I am paying for this class. I don't think much could upset me."

    "Michael-"

Michael ignored him, pushing past him and into the classroom.

The door closed behind him, blocking out the only source of light. Michael took his phone out of his pocket and flicked on the flashlight. He found the light switch and flipped it. Nothing happened. He flipped it a few more times. Still nothing. He turned away from the switch and pointed his phone-light back onto the room. The classroom seemed fine, all the desks and projectors and screens and... Michael froze. The light from his phone illuminated an arm. A pool of blood stained the carpet around the appendage.

"Jesus Christ..." Michael said, staring in horror at the dead body in front of him.

    "You shouldn't be here, Michael."

Michael spun around. Dr. Taylor was standing to one side of the room, his arms behind his back.

"Oh my God, professor, what happened? Is this guy dead?"

"He is dead, unfortunately, he was quite the subject till he lost his usefulness."

"What... what are you talking about?"

"Although, I think you'll make a good replacement, wouldn't you agree?"

    "Yes, I do."

Michael turned to see his professor, again, standing behind him. Two of them?

"What the hell is going on??"

The two Dr. Taylor's didn't answer him, instead beginning to slowly walk towards him. Step by step.

    "Hey, wait--"

Juniper reached out to stop the boy from going past her, but she couldn't quite get a hold of him in time. Something seemed very off to her, and she felt as though it was a bad idea for him to go so close to the room. Though Michael looked like he wanted answers, and Juniper had a feeling she wasn't going to be able to change his mind.

So, instead of following him to the professor, she took a few steps closer to the gathering crowd of students, just so she could hear the exchange a little better. The crowd only seemed to grow thicker, and Juniper found herself shouldering her way closer to the front so she could get a better look. As much as she didn't want to know what was going on, she couldn't help the curiosity either.

She eventually made it to the front of the crowd, just in time to watch Michael go into the classroom, followed by Dr. Taylor. She almost immediately felt as though her stomach had been filled with stones, and every instinct told her to leave. She had no business being here, especially not if all the classes were canceled. Michael was a big guy. Whatever was in that classroom, she was sure he could handle.

With that assuring thought, she turned her back to the door and tried to start working her way back through the crowd. However, this time she couldn't even get past the first person in her way, and after a moment of struggling, she was actually pushed away from the crowd and closer to the door. The girl whipped around towards it, staring at the knob as if it might twist. As if Michael and Dr. Taylor would both come out of there, and Michael would tell everyone that it was just a pest infestation. Or...a water leak.

That moment never came, and Juniper was realizing that Michael had been in there for much too long. Whatever had been behind that door, Dr. Taylor didn't want anyone to see. At that thought, Juniper quickly closed the distance to the door, grabbing the handle tightly. "Michael?" she called, pushing down on the metal before shoving her shoulder against the door, in hopes that it may open up for her.

The two Dr. Taylor's continued their approach towards Michael.

    "Oh, fuck this." He swore.

He reached to his left and picked up a chair. With all his strength, he threw the chair at the Dr. Taylor closest to him. Dr. Taylor's eyes grew wide the split second before it hit him in the face. He reeled back in pain, screeching like no professor, let alone human, should sound like. Michael bolted, pushing past the not-Taylor and towards the door. As he did so, a girl's voice called out from the other side.

    He didn't care.

He kept running, grabbed the door handle and pulled it open. Juniper fell to the floor in front of him as he did so, the classroom flooding with light. Michael glanced behind himself. The two not-Taylors didn't look quiet the same anymore. Their eyes were full of rage, pupils enlarged way more than what was natural. They smiled wide, toothy grins as they continued their approach. Worst of all, the not-Taylor Michael hit with the chair was missing an arm. Well, a human one. In it's place was a large, muscular, NOT HUMAN arm with razor sharp talon-fingers and rows of spines curling off of it. In the back corner of the room, he saw the bloody body of a college student. Blood still pooling around it. He looked back down at Juniper who was staring into the room. Well, at least he knew he wasn't the only witness to this insanity.

Michael bent down and helped Juniper to her feet. Before she could even get a word in, he held her hand and practically dragged her out of the room.

"RUN!" He cried, bolting through the door.

He pushed past the small crowd of students still lingering outside the door. Confusion broke out as the large man barreled through students, leading Juniper behind him. If she was trying to talk to him, he couldn't hear it. Fear and adrenaline had taken hold, blocking out everything but the need for an escape. He ran down the stairs, swearing as he ran. He pushed through the double doors of the academic building and ran outside. He spun, staring back up at the building, breathing heavily.

The bricks which once seemed so sturdy now looked like a trap which he'd just broken out of. Gray clouds hung in the sky and a cold wind blew through the air, dragging colored leaves with it.

    He turned to Juniper.

"Please, tell me you saw that too. Those... those things..."

A new sound echoed out from behind the classroom door, and as soon as it hit Juniper's ears, she questioned whether or not she was doing the right thing. Only now her determination to get Michael out of there had gone up even further, and it wasn't like she would be able to make it back through the crowd anyway. So she took one more deep breath, and gave the door another hard shove with her shoulder.

At the same moment, Michael pulled the handle from the other side, and the smaller girl toppled inside. The momentum sent her forward, and she knocked into the ground before she could even process the fact that she was inside the room. Once the brief stun from falling was shaken, her eyes quickly lifted to take a look around the room. She felt almost immediate regret, and though she had noticed the two Dr. Taylor's, she couldn't tear her gaze away from the bloody, dismembered student in the back of the room. Her mouth fell open just a bit, but she was too shocked to even scream. What the hell was going on?

Juniper was much too lost in thought to realize the tremendous danger that they were in, so she was lucky that Michael was soon grabbing for her, and pulling her up to her feet. That was when she finally snapped out of her, quickly scrambling to stand. Her wide eyes finally landed on Dr. Taylor, the one with the very much not human arm.

The sight encouraged her to quickly turn and stumble out of the room after Michael, and as much as she wanted to warn the gathered crowd about the danger that they were in, she couldn't seem to find her voice. She could only try to keep up with Michael, and replay the images over in her head. She had known something was wrong, very wrong. But she didn't quite realize just how fucked up the situation truly was.

Once they were outside the building, Juniper almost didn't want to quit running. Sure, they were a good distance away from the two Taylors, but that did not even come close to insuring them of safety.

Michael's voice made the girl jumped, her eyes flickering from him, back to the building in front of them. She gave a slow nod of response, still struggling to get out the words she so badly wanted to say. What was going to happen to all of those students that had crowded outside the classroom?
Hell, what was going to happen to her and Michael? The two Taylor's knew the two of them saw. Something told her that they didn't want that, and they would probably find a way to do something about it.

"I... I think we should keep going. I don't...- They're just going to come out of there," Juniper finally spoke, quickly turning away from the building. She reached out and grabbed Michael's wrist, pulling him in the opposite direction of the building. She wasn't quite as rushed as she had been when they ran from the building, but her pace was still brisk.

"We have to tell someone about that. We can't...- That kid was dead. Someone needs to...- Are you alright? Did you get hurt?" she cut herself off mid sentence, footsteps halting so that she could turn towards Michael. She had briefly forgotten that he had been in the room much longer than she had. If he was injured, she wanted to get him help before they focused on doing anything else. Her eyes were quick to sweep along the male's body, hunting for anything out of place, or any cut or bruise he may have received.

"I'm fine," Michael replied, still staring at the building. "They didn't get close enough to hurt me. I threw a chair at one of them and was able to get away."

He shuddered, images of the student's body and the not-Taylor's arm flashing through his mind. Their faces. The way they looked at him. He was nauseous.

"That wasn't.. they weren't.... what the hell is happening?"

He turned to face Juniper. She looked up at him, her bangs a mess about her face. She looked terrified.

"You're right. We need to find someone. Tell them about the student. We can't tell them about the Taylors. No one would believe us."

Michael began glancing around as he thought.

"We could go to the college president. The police. We could-"

He froze, locking eyes with another student. She was standing across the quad from them and was staring at Michael. She was light skinned with curly red hair, freckles, and round glasses. She wore a hoodie with the words "2015 Track and Field" printed on it. She looked right into Michael's eyes and began to give a toothy grin, eyes filling with rage and pupils enlarging beyond humanly possible. She began to walk right across the quad towards him and Juniper.

"Holy shit, there are more of them. Juniper, behind you!"

Juniper was having a tough time deciphering what had just happened. First, a student had been brutally killed... and Dr. Taylor was trying to keep that a secret. Only, there wasn’t just one Taylor... but two of them. The only logical explanation was that some assholes were pulling the worst prank Juniper had ever experienced. Yet even that theory seemed almost impossible.

Juniper started to nod along with Michael’s words, knowing that they needed to get away and tell someone. Probably the police, so that they could go safe the students and arrest both of the creepy Taylors. No one else would be able to do something. The police at least had guns, and that had to do some good. Right?

Juniper was just about to start moving again, feeling better now that she knew Michael was alright, but the male’s voice caught her attention. She whirrled around quickly then, eyes landing on the girl coming their direction. Something looked off about the girl, and reminded Juniper of her friend... Of Adam. How he had been acting so strange. People were becoming possessed. Something was definitely causing people to go insane.

“We need to go!” she said quickly, turning now to grab Michael again and start running. As of now, the only person she could trust was Michael. Who knew how many people were going crazy. How was it even happening to begin with? Juniper thought she was confused before, but now she knew she was.

As the two of them ran, Juniper spared a glance behind them, just to see the girl following at an almost quicker speed. “Oh shit. Oh, no,” she hissed, quickly looking forward to hunt for something to protect them. Michael had said he threw a chair at one of the Taylors. She could only assume that had been the cause of one missing an arm. Or...a human arm.

With that in mind, Juniper let go of her grip on Michael, and bent down to grab two, baseball sized rocks. She didn’t check to see if Michael was still running, and instead focused her attention on the girl approaching. Juniper threw one of the rocks at the girl, watching it soar through the air...

    ...And miss. By a lot.

She cursed under her breath, but quickly launched the second rock at the girl. This time it connected, hitting those round glasses dead center. The lenses instantly shattered, sending bits of glass into the eyes of whatever thing the girl had become. Juniper didn’t wait any longer to see if her attack worked, and she quickly turned away to begin running again. Her hope was that it at least slowed the girl down. She just needed to give her and Michael a little more time to escape.

    Mr. Morrow
Mr. Morrow sat in his desk chair, in his office, staring out the window.

Below him, members of the human race milled through the streets of the city. All of them busy. All of them hurrying. All of them ignorant of the terrible things to come. Things that had happened time and time again on worlds far away.

Mr. Morrow stared emotionless at them. If he had felt pity or shame or fear, you wouldn't have seen it on his face. He sat in his chair, one hand on top of the other in his lap, silent. His suit was as crisp and clean as it was every day. His red tie aligned perfectly inside the jacket. His pitch black hair shined with styling gel and was held in the most symmetrical style imaginable.

His desk was just as unnaturally tidy as he was. Every object was aligned parallel or perpendicular to the rest of the things on his desk. Each paper was perfectly stacked on top of another.

There was a knock at his door.

"Mr. Morrow, the C.E.O. is here to see you."

Mr. Morrow slowly turned to face the man who spoke. The intern's name was Jonathan; a lanky, self-conscious type of person. Mr. Morrow stared at him with the same, emotionless eyes.

"Very well. Tell them I'll be down in a minute."

    "Yes sir."

Jonathan left. Mr. Morrow turned back to look out the window. Phase one was already in full swing. Phase two would start soon, if it hadn't already. He had a lot of work to do.

    Michael
Michael found himself running for the third time that morning. The worst thing he thought would happen today was being late for his class. Now he had seen a dead body, ran from creepy duplicates of his professor, and was now running from a creepy girl who could run much faster than him. He looked back over his shoulder just as Juniper threw a rock at the girl, breaking her glasses. The girl came to a stop, blinking at the sudden blindness. He heard nearby students cry out in protest. They had no idea what was going on. Then again, neither did Michael. Juniper caught up to him.

    "Nice throw." Michael said.

They kept running until they came to another building. They both ducked inside. The hallways were mostly empty as many other classes had already started. Michael found an empty classroom and yanked the door open. They rushed inside and Michael closed the door behind them, flicking the lock in place. The only light in the room came from the window o the far wall. Finally, they could stop. They both were breathing heavily, adrenaline pumping through their systems. It took a moment, but, eventually, Michael's mind cleared enough for him to almost think straight. And he didn't accept it.

"This isn't real." He said. "This can't seriously be happening. Like, what the actual hell is going-?"

There was a loud knock at the door.

Michael looked at it, terror coursing through his veins. In the window stood Dr. Taylor, looking straight at him.

"Michael, would you come out of there please? I want to talk to you."

This... THING was almost identical to his professor. The was he stood, they way he spoke, they way he looked at him through the window. But Michael knew better.

"Like hell you do!" He spat.

But how the hell were they supposed to get out of there?

Juniper wanted to smile at Michael’s little compliment, but she couldn’t find it in herself to do so. She had just blinded a girl, or at least, that’s what it appeared. Whether or not it was still a person, a human, was very unclear to her. But she didn’t have the time to mull things over right now. Their first priority had to be finding somewhere safe. They needed to sit down and put together everything they had seen.

And Juniper had high hopes of this when they entered a new building, and locked themselves away into an empty room. She bent over and set her hands on her knees, wheezing in hefty breaths of air. She wasn’t the most atheltic person, and running was definitely not one of her favorite pass times. Though her adrenaline was beginning to slowly fizzle down to normal, and her breathing gradually returned to something closer to normal. At the same moment, Michael began to speak, saying a lot of things that Juniper had also been thinking.

Though before she could respond, the knock on the door cut her off. She looked towards it quickly, eyes widening at the sight of Dr. Taylor standing there. She could’ve sworn they had escaped him back at the other classroom. The one that held the dead student’s body. She was beginning to put two and two together then, and something clicked in her mind.

“Why is he after you? Specifically you?” she whispered now, looking from Taylor to Michael.

It’s not like it mattered that much, and it definitely didn’t make her question whether or not she was going to help Michael. It was just a question she wondered now. It seemed as though Taylor was singling out Michael. He wanted something from Michael. But as curious as she was, she didn’t want to find out.

She quickly moved for the window across the room, running her hands along the pan of glass. “Don’t look at him. Don’t talk to him, okay? We have to get out of here...and we have to get off campus. I need to get you as far from here as possible,” she breathed, glancing around the room now. She couldn’t find a lock on the window, or any latch to get it open with.

So, to improvise once again, she went around the room to grab a chair. She pulled it with her closer to the window, glancing towards Michael. “Come help me. We’ll break the glass. We can get out and...and I think we’ll be close to free,” she explained, nodding to the chair. If they broke the glass, they could climb out and run again. Taylor would have to get out of the building to follow them.

Michael glanced at the chair, then back at the window. It was a storm window, made with very thick glass that no simple chair was just going to break through. He walked towards Juniper, picking up the chair. Instead of throwing it, he positioned it at an angle underneath the door handle. He saw someone do that in a movie and it seemed to hold their pursuers back for a little while.

He moved to the window to give it a look over himself. Over last summer, he had done a little custodial work with the school and knew the buildings all fairly well.
