Name: Akilina Gato
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Appearance: Akilina is a short woman for the age of 16, and only stands the very modest height of 5'4. Her hair color makes her easily identifiable in flight from any other flying predator, and the beak that replaces her nose is odd but not very pronounced. The skirt of her dress is generally short, but generally has long billowy sleeves that hide her feathers to keep them clean and keep them from getting in the way as she works. Her hands are instead talons, in pairs of three, although they are jointed and as dexterous as any other species. She carries a
slim blade in a sheath on her back, although sometimes wears it on her hip
Race: Alien - Karura. Karura represent the most intelligent of a large species of bird like humanoids, although they lack much of the evolutionary predator traits that their brother and sister species do in favor of a more advanced brain.
Job: Runner - Combat Engineer, although she is the youngest she has spent as much time on the Black Star as anyone else. Despite this she often gets the odd jobs, or has to help when other positions are undermanned.
Racial Skills and Abilities: Long distance gliding, incredibly sharp vision at long distances, and the ability to see in UV light.
Normal Skills and Abilities: Small fixed wing air and spacecraft pilot, a working knowledge of most of the Black Star’s systems, an excellent scout during terrestrial missions. Due to her small size she is also very sneaky.
Weapons: Talons, double edged blade that is traditional for Karura warriors, and a pack of high explosive charges and mines to clear the way and perform hit and run tactics.
Armor: Heavier armor leaves the girl unable to glide, so she only wears light Kevlar.
Augs: None, personal augs are looked down upon by the Karura, and are considered a sin in their religion.
Personality: Akilina usually tries to remain stoic around her crewmates and in the face of her enemy, however being a young Karura girl cooped up inside of a metal box, she has a prankster streak.
The girl is also rooted in Karura tradition, so some of her clothing choices and bizarre actions on Karura holidays are considered eccentric.
Likes: She adores clothes and buying exotic Karura herbs and trinkets when they come into port, or come across it in raided ships or bases. Her aesthetic choices may seem abnormal to others, just as she views others as odd thanks to her ability to see in UV light and another color spectrum. She also particularly enjoys undercooked meat, which she finds to be the epitome of flavor.
She loves planets that are similar to her home of Solis, tall and plentiful mountains that are perfect for gliding long and short distances. Right behind this is the opportunity to fly one or two man fighters, although the feeling isn’t quite the same.
Mostly though, she cares for her comrades, and will never have a bigger smile than when her friends decide to participate in a Karura ritual, or follow their customs for a day.
Dislikes: If Akilina adores planets like Solis, she hates planets the opposite of it. Long flat deserts with no breaks in between and dry air infuriate her, as the only way to effectively scout is to be dropped from high above the planet's surface.
She dislikes the need to use traditional or energy based firearms as they annoy her feathers and leave them incredibly dirty afterwards.
Background: Akilina was born into a noble family on the planet Solis, and was rooted in the old and rich traditions of the Karura from early on. She learned the math behind the greatest pleasure of the Karura, gliding, and how to handle the ceremonial double edged blade used in her races rituals, and to fend off their more violent brother and sister species.
Colonization from other species on Solis had already begun however, which was displacing the advanced, but small race of the Karura and poaching many of their cousins. Smaller tribes flocked into the largest, creating their own city state, while others integrated into the colonists. Akilina however, was a noble, a warrior of Solis and took the encroachment of these outsiders to be an act of war. But she was too young and weak to do anything about it.
One day however, a raiding ship bombarded the colony from close above and Akilina took flight.
Originally a stowaway at the age of ten, Akilina made the spiritual oath of loyalty to the captain of the Black Star and its crew to thank them for aiding her people, beginning her career as a privateer.
Other: As the sun fell over the horizon, a small ship broke through the atmosphere, hovering at ten-thousand feet.
In the ship sat the advanced crew of the Black Star, armed and loaded for bear, aside from one young and petite girl who was a heavy contrast to the killing machines that she sat next to, a pair of goggles above her eyes, a small wireless camera connected to the right lens. On the same side, an earpiece was nestled into the side of the woman's head, a radio for communicating with the rest of the team.
The local government had been having problems with a professional group of pirates and raiders that had taken shop on a massive ship nearby, a floating fortress with a massive amount of anti air weapons. After losing several ships and personal in failed attempts to destroy the ship, they’d caved and called in privateers. The crew of the Black Star.
UAV’s and recon drones were always shot down before they could get in and do anything, fortunately the Black Star had far better than a recon drone, and she was now hanging out the door waiting for confirmation from the Captain.
An attentive Karura, armed with the ability to see in UV could easily pick out key targets on the floating fortress, and the pack of explosives on Akilina’s back issued by the armorer let her do more than just look. Added to that, Akilina wasn’t electronic or metallic in nature, and wouldn’t give any radar signature.
She heard chatter in her comlink, then dropped out of the dropship in a ball.
